The laboratory was founded in 1963 and has forty years experience of investigations in physics and mechanics of polymer and composites. About 20 years the head of the laboratory was Professor Yuri S. Urzhumtsev, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 1980 the head of the laboratory is Juris Jansons, Habil. Dr. Sc. Ing., Full Member of Latvian Academy of Sciences.
