POLYMER-CONCRETE COMPOSITES
Although the development of polymer-concrete composites has started more than 30 years ago, the interest in the study and advancement of this specific class of composites is still great. The application of these composites demands that they should exhibit specific characteristics suitable for the real service conditions. The use of various fillers with their characteristic variety of chemical compositions and the varying chemical activity towards the used polymer should also be based on special investigations. Chemical natures of the fillers significantly affect the adsorptional and adhesional interaction with the polymer binder.
| The structural and ornamental polymer-concrete composites were investigated and developed as part of the Latvian state scientific program: "Investigation, novel technologies and effective use of composite materials in engineering structures". |
| The
polymer-concrete composites of structural application
were obtained by using a polyether binder, lime flour,
quartz sand and granite chips. The granule and volume
content of the fractions was chosen so as to ensure the
most compact packing of the filler in its aggregate
state. The rheological properties of the resin with
disperse filler provided the formation technology of
specimens and elements. The ornamental composites developed are applicable as coating for decorative plates and various structural elements, as well as pastes for restoration and repair works. The compositions imitate granite, marble, and other mineral materials. The specific feature of the compositions is the use of a composite matrix and composite filler of the same epoxy type. An original method of producing decorative granules of the composite filler is suggested. |
